Did the founders of Congregation Knesseth Israel ever envision their “White Shul” becoming such a cornerstone of the Far Rockaway community? Here we stand before Congregation Knesseth Israel, affectionately known as the White Shul. It’s a beacon of Jewish faith and tradition right here in Queens. Congregation Knesseth Israel’s story begins in 1922. It started as Talmud Torah Kneseth Israel. The congregation first gathered in the Far Rockaway Chamber of Commerce building on Mott Avenue. Imagine those early days, a small group united by faith, laying the foundation for what would become a thriving community. In 1930, a unique opportunity arose. Temple Israel, housed in a striking white colonial structure, moved to Lawrence. Congregation Knesseth Israel purchased their former home, a building that would give the shul its enduring nickname: The White Shul. The building’s white exterior became a symbol of the congregation’s presence, a landmark in the neighborhood. The congregation thrived in their new home, but time marched on. By 1964, a new chapter began. Congregation Knesseth Israel moved to its current location on Empire Avenue and Sage Street. While the physical location changed, the name “White Shul” stuck, a testament to the enduring legacy of the original building. Even today, their website proudly bears the name. The White Shul has weathered storms, both literal and metaphorical, even recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. Through it all, the spirit of Congregation Knesseth Israel remains strong. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. From Rabbi Abraham B. Kahan, hired in 1928, to the present day, the White Shul has been guided by a series of dedicated spiritual leaders. Rabbi Kahan, trained in prestigious Lithuanian Yeshivos, brought his deep knowledge and passion to the congregation. He was followed by Rabbi Shimshon Zelig Fortman, and later, by Rabbi Raphael Pelcovitz, the first rabbi of the White Shul to deliver sermons in English. Congregation Knesseth Israel stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. It connects generations of Jewish people in the heart of Far Rockaway.
