From its humble beginnings in 1917 the First Resurrection Baptist Church has journeyed across Philadelphia. It started at 1000 W Poplar Street under Reverend George Cable. This small group faced obstacles. They moved to 16th and Parrish Streets then to 920 N Warnock Street. Reverend Thomas and Reverend Winn led during those challenging times.

The First Resurrection Baptist Church continued to grow. In 1924 Reverend J R Henderson became pastor. He served until 1933. Reverend John J Jenkins followed. His leadership saw membership boom. The church needed a larger space. Relocations to 1222 N 11th Street and 1211-15 W Girard Avenue followed. Redevelopment forced another move. Finally in 1959 the church found its current home at 5401 Lansdowne Avenue. It became a chartered church that year.

Reverend Jenkins sadly passed away in 1966. After a period without a pastor Reverend Claudis L Amaker arrived. He served for 23 years. His leadership expanded the First Resurrection Baptist Church. It became one of Philadelphia’s finest churches. He passed away on April 15 2012.

Reverend Barry J Lyons succeeded him. His youthful energy brought new ideas. He served until 1997. Then Reverend Jerome H Scott Sr took over. He led with a humble spirit until 2007. In 2009 Reverend Robert J McFadden became pastor. His leadership continues the church’s remarkable journey.
