In 1617 Cardinal Federico Borromeo fell in love with the estate. He even wrote a book praising the contemplative life there. Upon his death he bequeathed the estate to the Biblioteca Ambrosiana. The proceeds from the land were to fund daily masses in his memory and dowries for eighteen poor girls annually.
For over three hundred years Cascina Biblioteca remained under the library’s ownership. In 1941 ownership transferred to Count Orsi Mangelli. He used it for horse breeding and hay production. The city of Milan acquired Cascina Biblioteca in the 1960s. It became part of the expansion of Lambro Park.
