“All the stones have a soul.” Nek Chand said that. He believed they were alive. Here before the Faceless Rock Sculpture in Delhi, you might feel the same way.

The story of the Faceless Rock Sculpture is intertwined with the remarkable Nek Chand. He was a self-taught artist. Nek Chand secretly began collecting rocks in 1957. This was behind a government building in Chandigarh.

Initially, it was just a hobby. But during the 1960s, his vision expanded. He assembled rocks and recycled trash into art. Construction scraps from Le Corbusier’s Chandigarh project found new life. Broken household items transformed into sculptures. Thus, the Nek Chand Saini was born.

For almost 20 years, Nek Chand worked in secret. He created a garden filled with glittering sculptures. Gods, goddesses, and mystical beings populated his oasis.

In 1975, the government discovered his secret garden. Instead of shutting it down, they supported him. The city provided a salary and staff. In 1976, it opened to the public.

Chand’s Rock Garden became the second most popular tourist destination in India. It was only second to the Taj Mahal. Nek Chand’s creation spans over 30 acres. It is connected by walled passages and trails. Waterfalls and lush greenery enhance the experience. The sculptures invite visitors to join in.

The figures have a raw energy. They showcase simplified forms with mask-like faces. They are arranged in vast groupings. Nek Chand called it a “world of gods.”

Nek Chand didn’t like being called an artist. He felt God pushed him. He made it for his own pleasure.

Visiting the Rock Garden is extraordinary. One passes through a small doorway. Courtyards of varying sizes unfold. The walls are lined with broken ceramic mosaics and terracotta pots. Narrow passages and wide gorges reveal themselves. Waterfalls cascade down concrete slopes.

The garden is a testament to art and ingenuity. It’s a wholly Indian exhibition. The mosaic tiling underfoot adds to the detail. The Rock Garden has received worldwide acclaim.

Nek Chand’s sculptures powerfully demonstrated that creativity and intuition are not necessarily things that can be learned. They can speak across cultures and appear in all kinds of unexpected settings.
