Whispers of “The Pearl of Manhasset Bay” drift on the salty air. Manorhaven. That’s the name this charming village on Long Island’s North Shore proudly bears. Incorporated in 1930 Manorhaven’s story is one of resilience and unique history. Its residents fought hard to maintain local control. They successfully incorporated as a village even amidst Port Washington’s ambitious cityhood plans.
Manorhaven’s strategic location on the Cow Neck Peninsula played a significant role in its past. This area became home to a crucial seaplane base between 1939 and 1940. Pan American World Airways used Manhasset Bay for transatlantic flights. Think of the iconic Boeing 314 clippers gracefully taking off from Toms Point. Imagine the excitement as these magnificent aircraft soared above the waters. After the opening of LaGuardia Airport’s Marine Air Terminal Grumman took over the facility. Though the hangars are long gone the seaplane base continues to serve a purpose. Its present iteration dates back to 1948.
But Manorhaven isn’t just about aviation history. The village has a strong sense of community. Residents fiercely debated joining the Port Washington Police District in both 1948 and 1984. They ultimately decided to remain under the Nassau County Police Department’s jurisdiction. This decision speaks volumes about their desire for local autonomy and control. A more recent event highlights this community spirit. In 2022 Manorhaven Boulevard underwent significant beautification. Nassau County and the Village of Manorhaven collaborated on this project.
Manorhaven’s identity is deeply rooted in its past. The name itself is a testament to this. It reflects the community’s vision for their haven. A place that embodies its character and atmosphere. The village’s unique charm and history make it a treasured part of Long Island. It’s more than just a collection of houses. It’s a vibrant community with a story worth sharing. A pearl indeed. A shimmering gem nestled on the Manhasset Bay.
