The Haruna played a crucial role in several key battles. These include the Battle of the Indian Ocean and the Battle of Midway. It also participated in the Guadalcanal campaign.

In June 1944, during the Battle of the Mariana Islands, the Haruna sustained damage. A direct hit caused vibrations when running at full speed. By 1945, fuel shortages kept the ship moored in Kure.

On July 24 and 28, 1945, air raids struck the Haruna. Multiple hits led to severe damage and sinking. In July 1946, the ship was dismantled.
