Hidden within the Tâmega Valley lies the Church of Saint Mary of Jazente. A place steeped in history its very stones whisper tales of centuries past.

Jazente’s church is more than just a building. It’s a historical landmark showcasing late Romanesque architecture. The facade is striking. The portal dominates. Its tympanum holds the greatest originality. Intricate crosses overlap. Five circle openings form a unique cross pattern.

This wasn’t always so. The church’s story unfolds through time. In 1258 Abbess Margarida bore witness to King Afonso III’s administrative inquiries. Later in 1719 Paulino António Cabral a future abbot and Arcadian writer was born. He preached here between 1752 and 1784. His influence echoes even now. The church was his abbey. He was a leading figure of Arcadismo a classicist literary movement.

Inside you’ll find a Gothic sculpture. The Virgin Mary holds the Child Jesus. This polychrome limestone artwork embodies maternal and filial love. It’s a breathtaking sight. The church’s interior has undergone several renovations. Work was carried out between 1930 and 1960. Further conservation efforts took place more recently. The church’s vestments woodwork ceilings and doors were restored. The area for religious celebrations was remodelled.

But Jazente’s story isn’t just confined to its walls. Its history is interwoven with the people of the region. From the earliest records to the present day Jazente has been a vibrant part of Portuguese life. This small village has seen it all. The church stands as a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of a community.

So here we stand before the Church of Saint Mary of Jazente. More than just stones and mortar. It is a living legacy a testament to history and faith. It is a story waiting to be discovered. A story waiting for you.
