Ever wonder what it’s like to study within the walls of a former government headquarters? Here we are standing before the Hauptgebäude. This is the main building of the Europa-Universität Viadrina. It stands as a testament to Frankfurt (Oder)’s rich history.

Originally, this impressive structure was not a university building. It was built between 1898 and 1903. It served as the administrative seat of the Frankfurt (Oder) region. The Regierungpräsidium, or government presidium, oversaw local affairs from here.

The building’s design reflects a neo-baroque style. This style was popular at the time. The architects drew inspiration from other Frankfurt buildings. Look closely at the facade. You will see a horizontally-quadered ground floor. The upper floors feature sandstone pilasters and columns. These elements add depth and grandeur to the building.

Over the years, the Hauptgebäude has witnessed significant events. After World War II, the building sustained only minor damage. From 1952, it housed the Council and Day of the Frankfurt (Oder) district. This was a period of change and rebuilding in Germany.

In 1991, a new chapter began. The Hauptgebäude became the central hub of the Europa-Universität Viadrina. The university breathed new life into the historic building. Extensive renovations transformed the space. The building now houses classrooms and offices. It also houses the university library.

Notice the building’s layout. The design incorporates inner courtyards. These courtyards provide natural light and ventilation. The building also features an impressive main hall. This hall once served as the main assembly room.

Take a moment to appreciate the architectural details. The facade showcases Herrenleither sandstone. Alt-Warthauer sandstone trims windows and other architectural elements. Wünschelburger and Friedersdorfer sandstone highlight the main central building.

The Hauptgebäude’s location is also significant. To the north stands the Marienkirche. To the east, across Priestergasse, lies the university square. This connects the Hauptgebäude to other important landmarks.

Today, the Hauptgebäude continues to serve as a center of learning. Students from around the world study here. The building is a symbol of Frankfurt (Oder)’s transformation. It blends history with modern education. The Europa-Universität Viadrina’s main building stands as a reminder of the city’s past. It is a place where knowledge and history meet.
