“Groundbreaking.” That single word echoed the sentiment at Peterhouse Technology Park on October 2nd, 2023. Not groundbreaking in the innovative sense that the park is known for, but groundbreaking for a new expansion project. Peterhouse Technology Park, already a cornerstone of Cambridge’s science and tech scene, was about to get even bigger. The park, nestled southeast of the city center, enjoys convenient access to the railway station, major motorways, and city bus routes. This prime location has attracted major players like ARM, who recently built their new HQ within the park and leased surrounding buildings for the next decade. British Land, a prominent UK property company specializing in life sciences, innovation, and technology, recently acquired Peterhouse Technology Park. They recognized the park’s strategic location within the “Golden Triangle” as the perfect spot for a new lab-enabled office development. The project, christened “The Optic,” promised 95,000 sq ft of flexible workspace and cutting-edge laboratories. This new building would rise adjacent to the recently completed ARM HQ. The Optic’s design included fully fitted atriums, core spaces, and office spaces fitted out to Category A standards. The surrounding areas would be meticulously landscaped. The groundbreaking ceremony was a festive occasion, complete with drinks and a BBQ lunch. Lynn Summerfield, Project Director at British Land, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing British Land’s commitment to the Cambridge innovation ecosystem. Councillor Thornburrow highlighted the project’s importance for placemaking, while Ian Wright, Senior Bursar from Peterhouse, shared the technology park’s history and its expansion over the years. Carl Bennett, Director at SDC, the construction company for the project, reaffirmed their commitment to delivering excellence. The ceremonial first dig was performed by key figures from British Land and SDC. The Optic, set for completion in February 2025, aims to be a beacon of innovation. It will offer 95,000 sq ft of high-specification office and lab space, boasting an all-electric design and aiming for a BREEAM “Excellent” rating. With 94 EV charging points, solar panels, and a 2,500 sq ft roof terrace, The Optic promises to provide a sustainable and comfortable workspace for cutting-edge companies. In fact, ARM has already signed a lease for the entire Optic building, expanding their presence at Peterhouse Technology Park even further. This underscores the park’s attractiveness to leading tech companies and its role in fostering the growth of the UK’s tech sector.
