From sparks to satellites, the story of Zavod imeni Kozitskogo is a journey through time. We stand before a landmark that has witnessed the evolution of communication. Zavod imeni Kozitskogo, founded in 1853 as Siemens & Halske, began its life manufacturing telegraphs. Imagine Saint Petersburg then, a city of horse-drawn carriages and gas lamps, suddenly connected to the world by these newfangled devices. The factory, under the leadership of Alexander Vladimirovich Gorbachov, quickly became a hub of innovation. They didn’t just build telegraphs, they pioneered them, expanding their reach across the vast Russian Empire. By 1880, Zavod imeni Kozitskogo, still known as Siemens & Halske, had expanded, establishing workshops along the 6th line of Vasilievsky Island.

This location became a cradle of Russian telecommunications. It was here, in 1879, the first telephone line in Russia was laid, a feat accomplished within the factory’s own walls. This spirit of progress continued into the 20th century. Zavod imeni Kozitskogo became deeply intertwined with the development of radio. In 1902, they began producing radio components, becoming an integral part of Russia’s nascent wireless communication industry. This expertise led to a momentous partnership. In 1903, Siemens & Halske joined forces with Gesellschaft fϋr drahtlose Telegraphie m.b.H. to introduce the Telefunken system to Russia.

This collaboration brought groundbreaking wireless telegraphy technology to the country. Just imagine, right here at Zavod imeni Kozitskogo, the airwaves buzzed with messages. This marked a pivotal moment, connecting Russia to the world through the magic of wireless technology. After the revolution and nationalization in 1917, the factory’s original name was retired. The factory became known as the Petrograd Radiotelegraph Factory named after Kozitsky. Later, this was shortened to Zavod imeni Kozitskogo. But its innovative spirit remained unchanged. The factory continued to be a pioneer in the development and production of radio equipment. They focused on creating tools for mass public broadcasting. They were not just building devices; they were building connections.

Over the decades, Zavod imeni Kozitskogo diversified. Their production expanded beyond telegraphs and radios, encompassing a wide range of electrical and mechanical equipment. Yet, the core of innovation, ignited in 1853, continued to burn bright. Today, though much of the original factory may be gone, the legacy of Zavod imeni Kozitskogo lives on. It serves as a reminder of the power of communication and the enduring spirit of innovation that connected Saint Petersburg, and Russia, to the world.
