Gazing upon Sankt-Bartholomae-Kapelle, one might sense a quiet strength. Sankt-Bartholomae-Kapelle sits serenely, a testament to centuries of faith and resilience. The original Sankt-Bartholomae-Kapelle, a modest chapel, was consecrated in 1134. This was on Bartholomew’s Day, August 24th. It was built near a “fever spring,” a place believed to hold healing powers. The spring is located at the site of the later Waldkapelle St. Johann und Paul, built around 1617. Over time, the original structure was replaced. A new chapel arose in its place. This was during the late 17th century. The current Baroque form, with its distinctive onion domes and red cupola, emerged in the early 18th century. The design echoes that of Salzburg Cathedral, a nod to the region’s rich artistic heritage. Inside, the artistry continues. The stucco work, crafted by Salzburg artist Joseph Schmidt, adorns the church. Three altars, dedicated to St. Bartholomew, St. Catherine, and St. James, grace the three-apse choir. The choice of St. Bartholomew as the patron saint reflects his role as protector of alpine farmers and dairymen. Sankt-Bartholomae-Kapelle has seen its share of challenges. By the 19th century, it had fallen into disrepair. King Ludwig II intervened, saving it from demolition and funding its restoration. It was re-consecrated on July 25, 1868. Another renovation followed in the early 20th century, supported by Prince Regent Luitpold. Today, Sankt-Bartholomae-Kapelle stands as a beacon of faith and history. It is a cherished landmark on the shores of the Königssee.
