“Knowledge buried within these walls,” I murmur, tapping a weathered stone of the Tokyo Sanseidō building. We’re not at a temple or shrine today, but a place where words themselves are sacred. This, my friends, is the headquarters of Sanseidō, a publishing giant. Founded in 1881 by Tadakazu Kamei as a secondhand bookshop, Sanseidō Bookstore Ltd., it quickly grew. By 1884, Sanseidō expanded into publishing. They focused on academic works: dictionaries, encyclopedias, textbooks, even maps. Sanseidō catered to practical needs. They published smaller, more user-friendly dictionaries while their competitor, Fuzanbō, favored massive, specialized tomes. This focus required precise printing. So in 1889, Sanseidō established their own printing plant. It’s a testament to their commitment to quality and control. The very ground we stand on once housed a warehouse for that printing plant. The history of Sanseidō, however, isn’t without its struggles. Despite its popular dictionaries like the Nihon Hyakka Daijiten, the company faced bankruptcy in 1912. A remarkable turnaround occurred in 1915. Tadakazu’s son, Torao, separated the bookstore and publishing businesses, leading to its eventual revival. Sanseidō’s legacy rests heavily on its dictionaries. The Shin Meikai kokugo jiten is the best-selling Japanese-language dictionary, known for its clear definitions and examples. Its chief editor, Tadao Yamada, shaped its unique style, favoring the preservation of older words even as language evolved. This sometimes clashed with the more concise style of other dictionaries like the Sanseido Kokugo Jiten, which prioritized newer vocabulary. Sanseidō also published English-Japanese dictionaries, such as the long-used Concise English-Japanese Dictionary and the more recent Wisdom. From humble beginnings as a used bookstore, Sanseidō rose to become a cornerstone of Japanese language and education. As we leave this unassuming building, remember that the power of words resonates within these walls. Sanseidō’s story is a reminder that knowledge, carefully curated and shared, can shape generations.
