Did Immanuel Kant ever imagine his name gracing a gymnasium in Dortmund-Asseln? Here we stand before the Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium, or IKG as it’s locally known. This bustling hub of education opened its doors in 1969 as a co-educational grammar school. Originally called the “Städtische Gymnasium für Jungen und Mädchen,” the Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium shares a building with Max-Born-Realschule. This shared space, known as the “Schulzentrum Asseln,” underwent extensive renovations between 2015 and 2019. The Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium also occupies the former Hauptschule Asseln building, connected by a modern structure built in 1998. A new building was inaugurated in February 2023, expanding the campus even further. The Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a vibrant community of around 1200 students and 95 teachers. The school draws students primarily from the Brackel and Scharnhorst districts. The IKG prides itself on its commitment to both academic excellence and extracurricular activities. It’s a “School without Racism – School with Courage,” a “Fairtrade School,” and a “Future School in NRW.” This isn’t just a place to study; it’s a place to grow. From language immersion programs to award-winning science projects, from championship chess teams to a thriving orchestra, the Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium offers a wealth of opportunity. Imagine students preparing for the Cambridge Certificate in English or the DELF exams in French. Picture budding scientists achieving top ranks in the “Jugend forscht” competition. Envision young athletes rowing on the Phoenix-See during the annual Dortmund Rudercup, organized by the Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium itself. The Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium is a testament to the power of education. It is a place where young minds are nurtured, where talents are discovered, and where future leaders are forged.
