“Zhongshan” a name echoing through time. It stands for Sun Yat-sen. He is also known as Sun Zhongshan. This building that we are standing in front of is named Zhongshan Building in his honor.

Did you know that Zhongshan was not always called Zhongshan? Until 1925, it was known as Xiangshan meaning Fragrant Mountain. The name came from the many flowers that grew in the nearby mountains. In 1925, the city was renamed to Zhongshan. This was done to honor Sun Yat-sen. He is considered the Father of Modern China. Sun Yat-sen was from Cuiheng village. It is now part of Nanlang Town in Zhongshan.

He’s a figure revered by both the People’s Republic of China. He is also regarded positively by the Republic of China. He left an indelible mark on Chinese history. This building stands as a testament to his legacy. It serves as a reminder of the past. It inspires future generations.

Zhongshan itself has a history stretching back thousands of years. Much of the area was once part of the Pearl River estuary. Only scattered islands rose above the surface. Over time, alluvial silt filled the area. It became dry land. The northern parts of Zhongshan filled in during the Ming Dynasty.

During the Tang Dynasty the Zhongshan area was part of Dongguan County. It was a significant producer of sea salt. In 1082, a fortified settlement called Xiangshan was founded. This marked the first official use of the name. The settlement prospered. It was upgraded to a county in 1152.

After the Southern Song Dynasty collapsed, many descendants of court officials settled in Xiangshan. This included members of the imperial family. Significant land formation occurred in the area since the Ming Dynasty. Embankments were built under the Qing Dynasty. They prevented flooding in the new alluvial lands. The area of cultivation was extended.

Much of the First Opium War took place in and around Xiangshan. In 1839, Lin Zexu expelled British traders from the area. Qing dynasty soldiers resisted British attacks in 1840. They were ultimately overwhelmed.

The Opium Wars opened the region to foreign influence. A number of Xiangshan residents left to study overseas. This included Sun Zhongshan. They were among the creators of modern China. Xiangshan was one of the first counties in China liberated. This happened as part of the Xinhai Revolution. After Sun Zhongshan’s death in 1925, the county was renamed Zhongshan. This was in his memory.

Nationalist and Communist units launched guerrilla attacks. They fought against Japanese forces. This began in 1942. On August 15, 1945, Japanese forces surrendered unconditionally. Zhongshan was liberated.

Zhongshan was the scene of fighting during the Chinese Civil War. Nationalist forces held it for much of the war. On October 30, 1949, the People’s Liberation Army defeated them. The county came under the control of the People’s Republic of China.

In 1983, Zhongshan was elevated. Its status changed from a county to a county-level city. It was under the administration of Foshan. In 1988, Zhongshan became a prefecture-level city.

Today, Zhongshan is a modern city. It is a testament to the vision of Sun Yat-sen. This building is a reminder of his enduring legacy. It is a symbol of progress. It signifies the spirit of innovation. It characterizes Zhongshan. It is a place where history and modernity intertwine.
