What began as a small prayer group grew into the Unity Mission Church. The church’s story began with humble roots. Eight African American Christians in Detroit started meeting for weekly prayer and Bible study. They gathered in each other’s homes.
Early meetings took place at the Kemp residence on Central. Later, they moved to the Fluker home, also on Central. The group quickly grew to eighteen people. By December 1926, they felt the need to establish a formal church. Rosebud Smith suggested the name Unity Baptist Church. The group accepted it. Rev. O. C. White was elected as the first moderator.
From these humble beginnings, Unity Baptist Church began to grow. Rev. James S. Murray became the pastor in 1927. At the time, the congregation still worshipped in the Fluker’s basement. Rev. Murray served until 1937. That same year, the church moved into its first building. It was located on Bryden, at the corner of Roy Street.
In 1937, Rev. J. H. Hankerson was called as pastor. He served until 1939. Rev. James J. Goss then served from 1939 to 1945. In 1945, Rev. Clarence E. Palmer became the pastor. Under his leadership, the church bought a building at Tireman and American. This was the Oakland Bank Building. The congregation renovated it into their new church. It became known as the Old Bank Building.
Rev. Clarence Bolden was called to the pastorate in 1947. He served until 1948. In 1948, Rev. A. Daniel James was elected pastor. He served until 1962. The church faced a financial crisis in late 1962, lacking a permanent leader. Deacon Rufus Jackson and other officers led the church during this interim. They waited for a new pastor to be chosen. Unity Mission Church is more than just a building. It is a testament to the power of community. It is a place where faith and fellowship intertwine.
