Established in 1918 the Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Church boasts a rich history. It began in Newark New Jersey. The church served as a spiritual home for Ukrainian immigrants. It also preserved their cultural heritage. Over 700 families were part of the initial congregation. They had a large choir and a marching band.

The Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Church faced challenges. A financial crisis hit between 1921 and 1926. Many parishioners returned to Ukraine. The original church building was sold. The congregation moved to a new building on Court Street. This served as their church until 1938.

The Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Church persevered. Three lots were purchased on 19th Street. A new church was built. A joyous procession moved the tabernacle from the old church to the new one. This happened in 1937. The main dome and four side domes from this church are still at the present location.

The Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Church became a haven for refugees. After World War II Ukrainian refugees arrived in the United States. The parish helped them find housing and work. A monument was erected to honor parishioners who died in the war. This monument now stands in front of the church in Maplewood New Jersey.

The Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Church continued to adapt. Parishioners moved away from Newark. A new site was purchased in Maplewood New Jersey. A new church was constructed. The first Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the new church in 1974. It was officially consecrated in 1975.

The Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Church celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2018. A hierarchical Divine Liturgy was held. Awards were presented to dedicated church members. A banquet followed at the Maplewood Country Club. The church continues to thrive. It maintains its spiritual and cultural legacy for generations to come. It serves as a testament to the enduring faith and resilience of the Ukrainian community. The Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Church is more than just a building. It is a living symbol of faith community and heritage.
