A century of faith. That’s what this building whispers. Welcome to University Christian Church. This isn’t just a church. It’s a living testament to a community’s enduring spirit. Founded in 1906 as University Heights Christian Church it started small. A 45 by 30 foot mission-style building. Amazingly it held 200 people. The entire cost just $1400. Imagine the dedication. The faith it took to build this humble structure. They raised enough money to pay off the debt by the dedication day September 30 1906. University Christian Church’s name was officially changed in 1911. This modest beginning was only the start of something much bigger. A new sanctuary followed in 1920 seating 800. Then in 1952 the current building rose. This beautiful sanctuary boasts stunning stained-glass windows and incredible woodwork by Glenn Miller. The same Glenn Miller whose artistry graces Buckingham Palace the Riverside Church in New York City and Washington National Cathedral. This is no ordinary church. The additions continued. In 1967 a new education building church office and chapel were completed. University Christian Church became the first Open & Affirming congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Southern California in 1999. It’s a place of inclusion a beacon of acceptance. In 2019 it took another significant step becoming dually affiliated with both the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ. This building stands as a symbol of progress a place where faith and community intertwine. University Christian Church. A place where everyone is welcome. A place where history breathes. A place of faith hope and love. Let’s step inside.
