In 1896, on the joyous day of Nandotsav, a child destined for greatness was born in Kolkata. This child, named Abhay Charanaravinda Bhaktivedanta Swami, later known as Srila Prabhupada, would become the founder of the magnificent Radha Krishna Temple we stand before. This temple, also known as ISKCON Kolkata, isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a beacon of Bhakti Yoga, the path of devotion as described in the Bhagavad Gita. Srila Prabhupada’s journey began in Kolkata, but his mission took him across the globe. In 1966, he established the first ISKCON center in New York, spreading the teachings of Lord Krishna and gaining numerous devotees. He established 108 ISKCON centers worldwide before returning to his birthplace in 1970. He chose this very city, Kolkata, to establish the first ISKCON center in India. Imagine his Western disciples, heads shaved with sikhas, adorned in saffron robes and Vaishnava tilaks, chanting “Hare Krishna” through the bustling streets of Kolkata. Their presence was a unique blend of cultures, a testament to the universal appeal of Krishna consciousness. In May 1971, the first deity was installed here at ISKCON Kolkata, marking the beginning of a new era of devotion. The following year, 1972, witnessed Kolkata’s first Rath Yatra, a grand procession organized by ISKCON. This vibrant festival, starting from this very location, has become an annual tradition, drawing thousands of devotees. Today, the Radha Krishna Temple stands as a testament to Srila Prabhupada’s vision. Inside, you’ll find not only the deities of Radha and Krishna but also Jagannath, Baladev, and Subhadra Devi. A small room adjacent to the temple hall holds a special significance. It was here that Srila Prabhupada resided during his visits to Kolkata. His typewriter, dictating machine, a picture of his spiritual master, and the Srimad Bhagavatam are preserved as exhibits, offering a glimpse into the life of this remarkable spiritual leader. The Radha Krishna Temple welcomes everyone with open arms. Entry is free, and the temple doors are open throughout the week. Whether you seek spiritual enlightenment or simply a moment of peace, this temple offers a sanctuary in the heart of Kolkata.
