Did the rhythmic roar of airplanes ever disrupt classes here at Osaka City Mikuni Junior High School? We’re standing before Osaka City Mikuni Junior High School in Osaka’s Yodogawa Ward. This public junior high school has a history intertwined with the growth and changes of this area. Established in 1947 as Osaka City Higashimikuni Third Junior High School, it was one of the first junior high schools in the district after the post-war educational reforms. The name changed to Osaka City Mikuni Junior High School in 1949, incorporating the local name “Mikuni”. The school relocated to its current location in July of the same year. Imagine the disruption just two years later when Typhoon Jane caused significant damage, even collapsing parts of the school building. The school continued to expand, separating and giving rise to Osaka City Higashimikuni Junior High School in 1962 and Osaka City Suihara Junior High School in 1982. This speaks to the population growth of the area. Think of the ripple effect of these changes. The proximity to Osaka International Airport has influenced the school’s very architecture. Air conditioning and soundproofing measures were incorporated into the building design to minimize disruption from overhead planes. The school’s attendance zone includes students from Osaka City Mikuni Elementary School, Osaka City Nishi Mikuni Elementary School, and Osaka City Shintaka Elementary School. It’s fascinating to consider the many students who have walked these halls, their lives shaped by this unique environment, a blend of local history and the constant hum of international travel. Among them are notable figures like Shigeyoshi Kawasoe, a member of the House of Councillors, and even entertainers like the comedian, Kuwabata Ohara. Perhaps the sound of airplanes became a familiar soundtrack to their school days here at Osaka City Mikuni Junior High School.
