In 1913 a church stood tall at 3522 Trinity Street. It was Bethel Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church. This Bethel Methodist Church served a German-speaking congregation. The building’s history is fascinating. It wasn’t always a place of worship for African Americans.

Bethel Trinity Methodist Church initially catered to a German-speaking community. However things changed. Due to shifts in the community the German congregation eventually disbanded in 1943. That same year the Southern California-Arizona Conference of the Methodist Church designated the property for “Negro work”.

A pivotal moment arrived in July 1943. Thirty African-American Methodists led by Reverend Hamilton Boswell held their first service. They purchased the Trinity Street property. This marked the birth of Bowen Memorial Methodist Church. The name honors Dr. J.W.E Bowen Sr a former professor and elected Bishop. His son J.W.E Bowen Jr spoke at the renaming ceremony.

Bowen Memorial wasn’t just a church it was a hub of activity. Reverend Boswell’s leadership established various organizations and boards. The original debt was settled during his tenure. Subsequent pastors like Reverend John C Bain oversaw renovations. The church expanded materially and spiritually. The church even acquired adjacent land for parking.

The church faced challenges. A period of financial strain and low membership tested its resilience. Yet faith and community spirit prevailed. Pastors like Reverend William H Stevens fostered unity and celebrated the humble beginnings of Bowen Memorial. Numerous pastors guided the congregation through the decades each leaving their mark.

Bethel Methodist Church’s story is one of transformation adaptation and unwavering faith. From its beginnings as a German-speaking church to its role as a cornerstone of the African-American community in Los Angeles. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community. The church on Trinity Street isn’t just a building it’s a living legacy. A legacy of faith perseverance and service to the community.
