Was it courage or compassion that drove Viola Liuzzo? Here at Viola Liuzzo Playground, we honor a woman who embodied both. Viola Liuzzo was a Detroit housewife and mother of five. She felt compelled to act after the “Bloody Sunday” attack in Selma. In 1965, she answered Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s call for help. Viola traveled from Detroit to Selma to support the Civil Rights Movement.

Viola Liuzzo helped Black people register to vote. Tragically, she became the only white woman killed during the movement. While driving a Black activist from Montgomery to Selma, the Ku Klux Klan murdered her. This playground now stands as a testament to her sacrifice.

The Viola Liuzzo Park Association formed in 2015. It aimed to rebuild the playground. They wanted to honor Viola’s courage and spirit. The association also sought to raise awareness of her sacrifice. The park underwent major renovations completed in 2019.

Notice the monument unveiled here. It commemorates Viola Liuzzo and her best friend, Sarah Evans. The monument reads “Sisters in Life Sisters in Struggle”. Despite their different backgrounds, they shared a deep bond. Sarah Evans helped raise Viola’s children after her death. She ensured that Viola’s legacy continued. Their friendship exemplified kindness and sisterly love.

The monument also reads “It’s Everybody’s Fight”. These words remind us of Viola’s conviction. Before leaving for Selma, she told her husband, “It’s everybody’s fight.” The monument honors Michiganders who answered King’s call. It also remembers those who died advocating for voting rights.

Look around Viola Liuzzo Playground. You will see a statue of Viola walking barefoot. A Ku Klux Klan hood lies on the ground behind her. This powerful image symbolizes her defiance against hate.

Viola Liuzzo’s death led President Johnson to investigate the Ku Klux Klan. This ultimately encouraged legislators to pass the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Her sacrifice helped open voter rolls to millions of Black people in the South.

The Viola Liuzzo Playground is more than just a park. It is a memorial to a woman who believed in equality. It is a reminder that the fight for justice continues. May Viola Liuzzo’s story inspire us all to stand up for what is right.
