From the weathered stones of Burg Hauenfels a whisper of history echoes. Before you stand the remnants of a medieval structure perched high above G”utighofen. This is Burg Hauenfels a site shrouded in mystery and intrigue. Its story is largely unknown. Some even question if it was truly a castle at all. The very name Hauenfels is debated. It’s believed to be a misinterpretation of “Huwensteine” which translates more accurately to Eulenstein or Owl Stone.
Documents from 1316 mention these Huwensteine possibly referencing Burg Hauenfels’ earliest known mention. Archaeological finds suggest the site was in use from the 13th to the early 16th century. Imagine life within these walls during those centuries. The stonework whispers tales of daily life. It speaks of feasts and celebrations. It murmurs of hardship and defense.
Burg Hauenfels played a unique role in the Thirty Years’ War. Dominican Father Michael from Freiburg’s Predigerkloster sought refuge within its walls. He used it as a base for a guerrilla war against Swedish forces. Can you picture this brave priest leading a ragtag army of Austrian soldiers and local farmers? Their small-scale battles were surprisingly successful against a larger enemy.
Later the castle became a haven for bandits. The very stones seem to retain the echoes of their activities. They seem to hide their daring schemes and desperate escapes. The surviving structure is a testament to its resilience.
Today only parts of the building remain. A 13-meter-long section of the south-east wall survives. It is made of roughly hewn limestone blocks. A remnant of the northeast side stands too with a 3.1-meter opening. The outer wall reaches a height of approximately 4 meters. A beam hole suggests a two-story structure. Interior wall remains indicate a division into two rectangular rooms. Narrow openings in the front wall provided limited light. A plan sketch from the 1860s by Zuccalmaglio reveals details now lost to time.
Despite its fragmentary state Burg Hauenfels continues to stir the imagination. It stands as a silent sentinel. Its presence evokes the turbulent history of the region. As you stand before it imagine the lives lived within its walls. Imagine its role in local conflicts and its transformation from a noble dwelling to a hideout for outlaws. This is Burg Hauenfels. Its story is far from complete but its power to capture the imagination remains strong.
