Have you ever heard a story that started in 1924? Well, this one does. We’re standing before Haddon Heights High School, a historic building with a rich history. It was built at a cost of $500,000, which is the same as $8.9 million today, to address overcrowding at other schools in Camden County and to be the regional school for many towns. In fact, it was originally home to students from Audubon, Barrington, Magnolia, Stratford, Laurel Springs, Clementon and Haddon Heights. Can you imagine? Haddon Heights has a strong community spirit, and it’s reflected in the school. Its walls have seen generations of students come and go. Today, the school has a diverse population. Students from Merchantville join Barrington and Lawnside students in attending Haddon Heights High for grades nine through twelve. The school’s design is fascinating, using Gothic-Revival brick and marble from Georgia. And don’t forget the Garnets, the school’s athletic teams. The building is no longer the regional school it once was, but it continues to stand as a symbol of Haddon Heights. Did you know that the building was designed by Charles R. Peddle, a well-known Philadelphia-based architect? Now that’s a fact that few people know about Haddon Heights High School. Here, the school’s history is etched not only in its brick and mortar but in the memories of the community it serves.
