Picture the imposing brick facade of Heilig Kreuz. This church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith resilience and the spirit of a community.

Heilig Kreuz in Dortmund’s Kreuzviertel stands proudly. It’s more than just a place of worship. It’s the namesake of the entire neighborhood. Built between 1914 and 1916 the church is a striking example of brick expressionism architecture. Architect Hans Homann designed this three-aisled basilica. He built it despite the challenges of World War I.

The Heilig Kreuz congregation formed in 1911. They were a breakaway group from the Liebfrauen parish. Their desire for their own church fueled their efforts. The construction on Vinckeplatz was completed within two years. The sounds of hammers and chisels echoed across the burgeoning Kreuzviertel. The new church provided a much-needed spiritual anchor.

In 1919 four cast steel bells were installed. They still ring out today. They represent the second deepest bell chime in all of Dortmund. A community center the Kreuzhof was added in 1921. It served multiple purposes. It was a community hall a boarding house and later even a hotel. Heilig Kreuz became a central part of daily life for many.

World War II brought devastation. The church suffered significant damage. Only the steeple remained intact. The war’s shadow stretched long. Yet in 1947 rebuilding began. The community’s faith proved stronger than bombs. The interior was redesigned between 1957 and 1958. A 16th-century corpus from the Rhine-Meuse region now adorns the altar. The church is a place of restoration and renewal.

A 1992 renovation hearkened back to the original 1918 design. It also reflected the liturgical changes of the Second Vatican Council. Architect Gisberth Hülsmann guided this project. The mosaics above the main entrance are particularly noteworthy. They depict a triumphant Christ flanked by the Church and the Synagogue. This imagery reflects medieval theological interpretations. The church now acknowledges the antisemitic nature of this depiction. They offer a critical perspective on their own history.

Today Heilig Kreuz continues its ministry. It stands as a symbol of faith and history in Dortmund’s Kreuzviertel. This church is a reminder that even amidst war and change community and faith can endure. It stands as a beacon of hope. A place where community gathers and faith takes root. Heilig Kreuz is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of faith.
