Do you see how the light filters through the glass panels of the Pfarre St. Paul? This modern church, dedicated to Saint Paul, is a beacon of faith in the heart of Salzburg. The church, built in 1994 by architects Erio Hofmann and Adalbert Rothenthal, replaced a community hall that was deemed unsafe. It was consecrated by Bishop Andreas Laun on June 30, 1996. Pfarre St. Paul is more than just a place of worship; it’s a community hub.

Take a moment to admire the unique design. The church’s geometric forms – triangle, square, and circle – create a sense of harmony and unity. The triangular shape is prominent in the glass pyramid that tops the bell tower and in the timber structure of the roof. The central space of the church is close to a square, as are the windows in the weekday chapel. The circle is evident in the altar area and the glass portals, enhancing the design with a touch of delicate intricacy.

The building’s connection to the surrounding parish center with its hall, offices, meditation space, and group rooms is seamlessly integrated into the design. The kindergarten, housed in an existing structure, makes the complex a truly multi-purpose building, serving the needs of the community in various ways.

As you step inside, you’ll notice the unique altar. Its red concrete block design is slightly offset from the center, featuring twelve bronze heads nestled in niches. These represent the twelve tribes of Israel, the twelve apostles and, most importantly, the diversity of humanity. Look closely; you’ll also see a magnificent fresco depicting the journey of Saint Paul.

The altar, the lectern, and the tabernacle stand on a semi-circular podium, giving them a visual prominence. The lectern features five bronze heads. The topmost head represents Saint Paul, while the others, arranged vertically, represent the four evangelists. It’s a beautiful depiction of faith and the continuity of the gospel. The Pfarre St. Paul is a testament to modern architecture, designed with functionality and artistic finesse, making it a must-see on your Salzburg exploration.
