Remember the name Oxford Park? This green space is now officially known as Parc Georges-Saint-Pierre. Let’s explore its history together.
Parc Georges-Saint-Pierre is located in Montreal. It is a popular spot for relaxation and outdoor activities. The park is open daily from 6:00 am to 12:00 am.
Once known as Oxford Park, it got its start in the 19th century. The Oxford Park Association managed activities here. Many locals who grew up nearby still call it Oxford Park. In 1996, the city officially renamed it Parc Georges-Saint-Pierre. This was to honor the founder of Caisse Populaire Saint-Raymond. This credit union was a vital part of the community.
This park is famous for its sporting history. Hockey legends like Doug Harvey honed their skills here. Howie Morenz and Kenny Mosdell also played here. Fleming Mackell too. They were part of a neighborhood house league. Teams like Terrebonne Park, Benny Park, and Patricia Park competed. Boxing legend Johnny Greco also enjoyed sports here as a child. Parc Georges-Saint-Pierre is bordered by Oxford Avenue. Upper Lachine Road, Old Orchard Avenue, and Saint Jacques Street surround it.
The land was once part of a farm. The Brodie clan, from Scotland, owned it. After generations, the family sold it to Montreal in 1949. The city paid $73,000. There was a condition. The historic farmhouse had to become a library. Or it would be used as a facility for children. But the city didn’t keep its promise. The stone building was torn down in the 1960s.
Parc Georges-Saint-Pierre also hosted a long-running Italian Festival. This festival was cancelled. The city added a fenced-off plastic turf soccer field. Fireworks could damage it. But Italian events still occur in the park. ItalFestMTL and Montréal Italian Week are examples.
Today Parc Georges-Saint-Pierre offers many amenities. There is a basketball court for sports fans. A children’s playground provides fun for kids. A pétanque court is available. Ping pong tables are also there. You can also find a picnic area. Other facilities include a drinking fountain and washrooms. There is even a welcome center. It is located near Oxford Avenue. In winter, the welcome center opens when the skating rinks do. The chalet offers changing rooms and a changing table.
So whether you’re here for sports, relaxation, or community events, Parc Georges-Saint-Pierre has something for everyone. Take a moment to appreciate its rich history. Think about the people who shaped it into the park we enjoy today.
