What echoes within these walls? It is the spirit of aviation’s Golden Age. Welcome to the Ryan Visitor Center. It is the main visitor center for the Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. The Ryan Visitor Center is named after William Fitts Ryan. He was a New York politician. He championed the creation of the park.

Here at the Ryan Visitor Center, we stand in what was once New York City’s first municipal airport terminal, Floyd Bennett Field. The building has been carefully restored to its 1930s appearance. This was the height of the Golden Age of Aviation.

Imagine travelers bustling through this very space. They were eager to embark on record-breaking flights. Aviation was still a daring adventure.

Floyd Bennett Field opened in 1931 with great hopes. Passenger service was not a big business then. Airmail contracts were the real money maker. However, Newark Airport already served the New York area. New York politicians could never convince the Postal Service to switch airfields.

Many famous aviators used Floyd Bennett Field. Howard Hughes, Amelia Earhart, and Wiley Post all graced this airfield with their presence. Its long runways and lack of obstacles made it ideal for transatlantic flights.

Inside the Ryan Visitor Center, discover the Floyd Bennett Field Aviation Museum. It focuses on the 1930s. The museum is divided into four rooms. Each room covers a different aspect of the airport’s history.

Explore exhibits about the airport’s conception and grand opening. Learn about Floyd Bennett himself, the airport’s namesake. Discover the luxurious amenities offered to early travelers. There was a lounge, telegraph office, barber shop, and even the Aviation Bar and Grill.

One room is dedicated to the stunt pilots. They attempted to set new world records from this very spot. See memorabilia from some of their daring flights.

The military history of Floyd Bennett Field is also covered. From 1941 to 1971, the airport served as a naval air station. You can watch old newsreels from the 1930s publicity flights. They show some of the daring feats achieved here.

The lower level of the Ryan Visitor Center once housed the ticket desk, baggage check, lounge, and restaurant. The upper floor held airport offices, pilot quarters, and the U.S. Weather Bureau. Today, the upper floor is used for National Park Service offices.

Take a moment to appreciate the painstaking restoration. During a three-year project, the Ryan Center was restored to its 1939 appearance. Paintings depicting modes of transportation were also restored. A new elevator was added for accessibility.

As you leave the Ryan Visitor Center, remember its significance. It stands as a testament to the dreams and daring of the early aviators. It serves as a gateway to exploring the natural wonders of Jamaica Bay. It is a tribute to William Fitts Ryan. He envisioned this park for all to enjoy.
