“Wow this is great” That’s what Mark Ernestus thought in 1986 hearing house music at Berlin’s Oranienbar. This pivotal moment sparked a passion that led to the creation of Hard Wax. Right here in front of you stands Hard Wax a legendary Berlin record store. Founded in December 1989 it quickly became a cornerstone of the city’s techno scene. Originally located on Reichenberger Strasse Hard Wax initially focused on soul funk and reggae. It then shifted its focus to house and techno music. The store became a hub for the burgeoning techno community. Hard Wax played a significant role in the development of the Berlin-Detroit axis. Many prominent DJs including DJ Hell Gernot Bronsert of Modeselektor and Marcel Dettmann worked at Hard Wax. Its mail-order system represented half its sales in 2009. In 1996 Hard Wax moved to a larger space sharing its premises with the Basic Channel record label and Dubplates and Mastering studio. This move reflected the shop’s growing influence and its commitment to the electronic music scene. Hard Wax’s reputation spread worldwide attracting musicians and DJs. The store’s unique atmosphere and carefully curated selection of records made it a destination for music lovers. In 2023 Hard Wax relocated again to Kraftwerk Berlin. It now stands alongside Tresor another legendary Berlin institution. The shop’s longevity reflects its deep connection to the city’s music culture.
