“A new spring.” The words seem to echo the very spirit of Calvary Chapel North. You might know it as Calvary New Spring now, but the heart of this place beats with a legacy that goes back further. Pastor Jim Callaway, a Texan born and bred, planted the seeds for this community back in 1997. Imagine, a former Marine, swept up in the Jesus People movement of the ’70s, finding his calling right here in San Antonio. He started Calvary Chapel North in a humble clubhouse, and for 23 years, he poured his heart into nurturing a community founded on the Word of God. Pastor Jim’s journey itself is a testament to the power of faith and redemption. He overcame personal struggles, his ministry fueled by the very grace he preached. But every season has its change. In 2020, Pastor Jim passed the torch to Pastor Hector Velarde, a man who had served with him years before, a man who felt the call to return to San Antonio and lead this flock. With the transition came a new name, Calvary New Spring, symbolizing the continued growth and vitality springing from the deep well of biblical teaching established by Pastor Jim. Today, Calvary New Spring stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith, community, and the belief in new beginnings.
