What if every grocery item, every building material, every electronic gadget met a consistent level of quality? Here at the Emirates Authority for Standardization & Metrology (ESMA), this “what if” became a reality. Established in 2001 by UAE Federal Law No. 28, ESMA’s mission was to elevate the UAE’s economy through standardization, metrology, and quality control. The Emirates Authority for Standardization & Metrology aimed to create a unified system for managing standards and regulations. ESMA played a vital role in bringing order to the diverse marketplace of the UAE. Think about the food we eat, the materials used to build our homes, or the electronics we rely on daily. ESMA ensured these products met minimum quality requirements through standardization. This process not only protected consumers but also streamlined production and boosted the national economy. The Emirates Authority for Standardization & Metrology didn’t just set standards; they also ensured compliance. Through the Emirates National Accreditation System (ENAS), ESMA evaluated conformity assessment bodies. This ensured that products met international standards and fostered trust in the quality and safety of goods within the UAE. Beyond standardization, ESMA also delved into the precise world of metrology, the science of measurement. ESMA oversaw the National Measurement System, guaranteeing the accuracy of national measurement standards and providing expertise on metrological issues to the government and industry. ESMA also operated an Information Center, a hub for national and international standardization information, keeping the UAE at the forefront of global best practices. ESMA’s work had a profound impact, fostering economic growth and international collaboration. By issuing the Emirates Quality Mark (EQM), ESMA recognized both local and international products that met stringent quality standards. The Emirates Authority for Standardization & Metrology championed environmental responsibility, ensuring sustainable practices in industries and certified product safety. Sadly, in 2020, ESMA merged with the newly formed Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology. However, its legacy continues to shape the UAE’s commitment to quality and excellence.
