Beneath the shadow of Jingshan Park’s central hill, a story unfolds. Jingshan Park, also known as Coal Hill, stands as a silent witness to centuries of history. It’s more than just a green space; it’s a breathing testament to imperial power, resilience, and the ebb and flow of time. Jingshan Park is situated directly north of the Forbidden City. It was created from the earth excavated to build the Forbidden City’s moat. Imagine the sheer manpower and animal strength required to move all that soil in the 15th century. This created a hill with five peaks, each crowned with a pavilion. From these peaks, officials once enjoyed leisure and took in the panoramic views. This hill, born from the remnants of the Forbidden City’s construction, offered protection from the northern winds according to fengshui principles. A particularly poignant story is tied to the Ming Dynasty. The last emperor, Chongzhen, chose Jingshan Park as his final resting place. He hanged himself from a tree as Manchu troops entered Beijing in 1644. A marker and notice board inside the park commemorate this tragic event. Climb to the top of Jingshan Park’s hill. The view of the Forbidden City is breathtaking, especially in the early morning light. In spring, Jingshan Park explodes with color as thousands of peonies bloom in a riot of pinks, whites, and maroons. The park also pulsates with local life. On Sunday mornings, it transforms into a hub of activity. People practice tai chi, dance, and enjoy the vibrant community atmosphere. Choirs, large and small, fill the air with music. Bonsai displays and changing indoor exhibitions of Chinese handicrafts and artwork provide quiet moments of contemplation. Jingshan Park isn’t just a place to visit, it’s a place to experience.
