Behold a spectacle of vibrant colors a blanket of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers. You are now standing at the Carlsbad Flower Fields. This isn’t just a garden it’s a living canvas painted by Mother Nature herself.

For over sixty years these rolling hills in North San Diego County have transformed. The transformation is into one of the world’s most spectacular displays of natural color. The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch bloom for six to eight weeks each year. This happens from early March through early May. The annual burst of color announces the arrival of spring in Southern California.

The story of these fields is steeped in pioneer spirit. It shows persistence for perfection and a lot of hard work. Ed Frazee is considered the father of The Flower Fields. He first saw ranunculus blooms in 1922. His father Frank grew English peas in a Carlsbad field. This field was near Tamarack Avenue for horticulturist Luther Gage. Frank Frazee watered the flowers that grew in the garden including ranunculus.

A fire destroyed the Frazee ranch a few years later. The family moved to Oceanside. Frank began growing freesia bulbs. In 1932 he added ranunculus. He introduced his son Edwin to the art of seeding. By age 16 Edwin quit school to work full time in the flower operation.

Edwin improved his ranunculus crop. By the 1950s he bred a superior ranunculus bulb. This bulb had an unprecedented infusion of petals known as a double. This made him the only commercial ranunculus grower in the U.S. Frazee expanded his crop to a coastal slope in Carlsbad. It overlooked the ocean and Highway 101. The vibrant colors attracted motorists. It quickly became a tourist attraction even gaining attention from National Geographic.

By 1975 Edwin Frazee retired. His sons John and Jim took over the business. Soon after the Flower Fields moved north off Palomar Airport Road. The land was owned by Carltas Co. the land division of the Paul Ecke Family. For years it was used to grow the Eckes world-famous poinsettias.

In 1993 Jim determined the fields were not cost-effective. He asked Paul Ecke Jr to terminate his lease. The news was disturbing to Mr. Ecke. The fields represented a continuing part of the floral business. In August 1993 Carltas secured a loan. This was to keep the fields running for at least two more years. Edwin Frazee was persuaded to come out of retirement. He provided knowledge about growing the crop. The crop now includes gladioli watsonia sparaxis oxalis babiana and tritonia. The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch was born.

Today the operation represents a synthesis of a working ranch and tourist attraction. Over 150000 visitors a year enjoy the parking garden center special events and tours.

The Tecolote Giant Ranunculus is one of the finest strains of ranunculus plants in the world. The ranunculus flower is native to Asia Minor. Over 50 acres are devoted to raising the ranunculus bulb crop. Approximately 5 acres are used for gladioli. Watsonia and other flowers use about five acres.

In 2014 coffee entered the stage at The Flower Fields. The Ecke family and Mellano & Company partnered with Frinj Coffee. They planted over 450 Coffea arabica trees. Each spring visitors can delight in the aroma of jasmine from the coffee flowers. They can witness one of the first southern California coffee orchards.

As you wander through these fields take a moment. Think about the generations of farmers. Envision the hard work and dedication. Notice the beauty and the innovation that created this spectacle. The Carlsbad Flower Fields are more than just flowers. It is a symbol of nature’s artistry and human ingenuity. It’s a place where the ordinary transforms into the extraordinary.
