In 1959, Greenlawns School Worli started as a kindergarten. Esso Petroleum, then known as Stanvac, created it for its foreign employees’ children. The school was first located at Anand Bhavan. Mrs. Daphne Clare Fraser Thomson and Mr. Lalit Gandhi bought it from Stanvac.

Later, the Atomic Energy Commission acquired Anand Bhavan. So the school moved to the ground floor of Poddar Bungalow at 6, Worli Sea Face. Mr. Gandhi expanded the school. In 1965, Mrs. Thomson left India. Mr. Gandhi then included his wife and close relatives as partners.

In 1966, Greenlawns School expanded to Bomanji Petit Road. Greenlawns School has been running at two locations since then. Mrs. Sara D’mello and Mrs. Amy Writer were appointed as principals after Mrs. Thomson left.

Mr. Lalit Gandhi and Mr. C.U. Shah converted both schools into a Public Charitable Trust in 1974. It was named C.U. Shah Education Foundation and C.U. Shah Education Trust. Both schools are run by these trusts.

Mr. Lalit Gandhi managed the school from 1960 to 1983. His son Tushar studied at Greenlawns School. His grandson Kushal also attended Greenlawns School.

Mr. Gandhi’s daughter Mrs. Minal Shah and her family now manage the schools. They have helped make Greenlawns a top ICSE school in India.
