“Self-defense without weapons.” Ever heard that phrase near the Sambo Exit/JCT? It might seem out of place amidst Osaka’s highways. Yet, this junction’s name echoes a martial art with Soviet roots. Let’s explore.

The Sambo Exit/JCT. Its name might puzzle you. Sambo, a martial art and combat sport, shares its name. It originated in the Soviet Union in the 1920s. The word “sambo” itself is an acronym. It stands for “samozashchita bez oruzhiya.” This Russian phrase translates directly to self-defense without weapons.

Sambo was developed for the Soviet Red Army. Its goal was to improve hand-to-hand combat skills. The sport blends various wrestling styles and self-defense systems. These include kick-boxing and fencing.

Two pioneers, Viktor Spiridonov and Vasili Oshchepkov, shaped Sambo. They independently created different styles. Eventually, these styles merged. The result was the Sambo we know today.

Oshchepkov had trained in Judo in Japan. He studied under its founder Kano Jigoro. Spiridonov’s style was different. Due to war injuries, his approach was softer. It relied less on brute strength.

In 1938, Sambo gained official recognition in the USSR. Anatoly Kharlampiev, a student of Oshchepkov, was instrumental in this. He’s often called the father of sport Sambo.

Today, several Sambo variations exist. Sport Sambo resembles pre-World War I catch wrestling and Judo. Combat Sambo, designed for the military, includes striking techniques like punches and kicks. Freestyle Sambo allows chokeholds. This encourages participation from Judo and Jiu-Jitsu practitioners.

Sambo nearly became an Olympic sport. FILA recognized it in 1968. It was even included in the 1973 World Wrestling Championships. However, due to political issues, it never made it to the Olympics.

Despite this, Sambo remains popular. It’s practiced worldwide. The International Sambo Federation FIAS sanctions international competitions.

Sambo’s uniform includes a kurtka. This jacket resembles a Judo keikogi. Competitors wear red or blue outfits for easy identification. Instead of belt colors, Sambo uses a competitive ranking system. High-level achievements earn the title “Master of Sport”.

Though the Sambo Exit/JCT in Osaka might seem unrelated to the martial art, the shared name offers an intriguing link. Next time you pass by, remember the story of Sambo. A Soviet self-defense system that traveled the world. A combat sport with a philosophical name. Self-defense without weapons.
