Did the vibrant laughter of children ever echo through these halls? Chiba City Masago Fifth Elementary School has witnessed generations of young minds grow and flourish. Established on April 1, 1975, this school has become a cornerstone of the Mihama Ward community. Its history is intertwined with the lives of countless students, teachers, and families. The current principal, Tomoi Yōko, reflects on her first year, sharing how much she enjoys seeing the children’s innocent joy. The school grounds boast beautiful plants, lovingly tended by volunteers. Beyond the school walls, a network of supportive figures, including safety watch volunteers, childcare providers, and community members, contributes to the students’ well-being. The school’s motto, “A school where everyone is recognized,” “A family and school where everyone loves each other,” and “A community where everyone grows together,” emphasizes the collaborative spirit between families, the community, and the school. These values resonate in Principal Yōko’s memories of her own childhood. She grew up in a nature-rich environment in Awaji. Her adventurous spirit led her to explore beyond the confines of her school, cycling with friends to challenge neighboring elementary schools in dodgeball. These experiences fostered a sense of independence and community, values she now instills in her students. Former student, Hiroyuki Takizawa, recalls his time at Masago Fifth Elementary. With close to 45 students per class and about 1,500 students in total, the school was a bustling hub of activity. He fondly remembers the fierce competition for lunchtime treats and library books. School life was a constant cycle of learning and extracurricular activities, with practice sessions filling the days from morning till dusk, even on weekends. Despite the busy schedule, he cherishes those memories. Masago Fifth Elementary School is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a testament to the power of community, the joy of learning, and the enduring spirit of childhood.
