A five-meter-high bronze enigma. That’s the Riehmers Hofgartensäule. It stands before you a testament to abstract art. Created by Gerson Fehrenbach in 1985-1986 it graces the courtyard. This wasn’t some random placement. Fehrenbach had a studio here in Riehmers Hofgarten. The sculpture’s installation coincided with the complex’s renovation.

The Riehmers Hofgartensäule isn’t just a pretty face. It’s a piece of Berlin history. It reflects the spirit of a unique building complex. Riehmers Hofgarten itself a masterpiece of urban planning. It was the brainchild of Wilhelm Riehmer a master builder. He dared to create a peaceful courtyard garden. This was unlike the typical cramped tenement blocks of 19th-century Berlin. Riehmer’s vision transformed the city. His courtyard garden became a model. It’s a model still celebrated today.

Riehmer’s innovative design included eighteen five-story buildings. Larger apartments faced the street. Smaller ones three-room minimum overlooked the courtyard. The exterior boasts a mix of architectural styles. Late Classical to Neo-Baroque elements adorn the facades. The result? An attractive complex for well-heeled tenants.

War tragically scarred Riehmers Hofgarten. Its left wing was destroyed in World War II. Despite the damage the building complex was listed in 1953. The facades were restored a decade later. Today the complex houses offices medical practices cinemas and even a hotel. It’s considered one of Berlin’s one hundred most important buildings. And there it stands our bronze sentinel the Riehmers Hofgartensäule. A silent observer of this remarkable history. A perfect blend of art and urban development. A lasting tribute to creativity and perseverance.
