Pause for a moment and consider the weight of history held within this memorial. We are standing at the Gefallene 1914 – 1918 War memorial in Lüneburg. It is a poignant reminder of the First World War. It serves as a place of remembrance for those who lost their lives.

This memorial is classified as a site of commemoration. It is similar to a historic monument. However it is typically smaller in scale. These memorials can range from grand war monuments to simple plaques on a wall. This Gefallene 1914 – 1918 War memorial is specifically dedicated to those who fell during the First World War.

The era of world wars in the 20th century left visible scars on Lüneburg. During World War One, about 10 million soldiers died in military battles. World War Two and the genocide of European Jews was the biggest disaster in human history. It is estimated that 55 million people were violently killed between 1939 and 1945.

Lüneburg’s cemeteries hold the graves of 1327 war dead and victims of Nazi tyranny. These graves are spread across several sites. These include the war grave sites at the central cemetery and Michaelis cemetery. Also included are the north-west cemetery and the Tiergarten honorary cemetery. The Tiergarten site contains victims of the 1945 concentration camp prisoner transports.

These graves hold German and foreign soldiers. They also hold civilians, men, women, and children. Their graves are protected by law. They serve to remind future generations of the terrible consequences of war.

The Ehrenfriedhof Tiergarten is a memorial and place of learning. It is located in the Lüneburg Tiergarten forest. Those buried here are mostly victims of a war crime in Lüneburg’s history. Around April 7 1945, Nazis murdered many concentration camp prisoners. This took place near the railway area in the Tiergarten. In total, 256 people died here.

A few months after the end of World War Two, the British occupation forces learned of two mass graves. These graves were near the site of the present cemetery. They arranged for the bodies to be moved. They were reburied in individual graves on a forest clearing. A ceremony was held on October 3 1945.

Between 2020 and 2023, four information boards were created. This was a joint effort by the Hansestadt Lüneburg’s working group. Victim and family associations and experts were involved. The newly designed cemetery area and information boards were inaugurated on April 23 2023.
