A legacy forged in faith. That’s the story of Faith Temple Pentecostal Church. Right here in Salt Lake City, this church stands as a testament to the unwavering spirit of one woman. Rosemary “Mama” Redmon Cosby. In 1961, Rosemary embarked on an incredible journey. She left Indianapolis with her four children, determined to walk from Kansas City to Utah. While they walked part of the way, strangers provided shelter and financial support, helping them reach Salt Lake City. Upon arriving, Rosemary immediately began holding services in her home. Her dedication culminated in the founding of Faith Temple Pentecostal Church in 1968. Faith Temple Pentecostal Church quickly became a spiritual anchor for many. Rosemary’s legacy continued through her granddaughter, Mary Cosby. Mary inherited the church and a significant fortune, but with a unique condition. She had to marry her step-grandfather, Robert C. Cosby. This unusual marriage took place in 1998. Mary became the church’s First Lady and an evangelist. The church grew, even establishing a second location in Indianapolis. However, Mary’s leadership wasn’t without controversy. Allegations arose, accusing her of running a cult-like organization. Former members claimed Mary referred to herself as God, exploited church members for labor, and used fear tactics to maintain control. Mary vehemently denied these accusations, stating they were “ridiculous” and stemmed from those seeking fault. The church faced legal battles, including a lawsuit against staffers accused of embezzlement. Despite the controversies, Faith Temple Pentecostal Church remains a significant part of Salt Lake City’s religious landscape. It’s a story of faith, family, and controversy, all interwoven into the fabric of this unique place of worship.
