This imposing structure before us is the Haus der Statistik. It’s more than just a building. It’s a living testament to Berlin’s resilience.
The Haus der Statistik. Built between 1968 and 1970. It served as the headquarters for East Germany’s State Central Administration for Statistics. Imagine the number crunchers. Working diligently within these very walls. Gathering data for the DDR.
After reunification German authorities occupied the Haus der Statistik. The Federal Statistics Office even housed an office here. It allowed citizens to examine their Stasi files. Think about that. The very building once used to track citizens was used to help them access their own secret police records.
By 2008 however it stood empty. A decaying monument. A symbol of a divided city. Plans for demolition swirled. The building’s fate seemed sealed.
But then a group of activists intervened. The Allianz bedrohter Berliner Atelierhauser. They saw the Haus der Statistik’s potential. They hung a banner declaring its future use. It boldly proclaimed “Here will be created for Berlin spaces for art culture and social activities”. It was a masterful act of defiance and vision.
This bold move sparked a transformation. The city of Berlin acquired the Haus der Statistik in 2017. It became a community project. A model of participatory planning.
The Haus der Statistik’s rebirth continues. It will house government offices. Affordable housing is also planned. A kindergarten will occupy space within the building. There will be multi-use spaces for artists and community gatherings. A new town hall will even be located here.
This isn’t just restoration. It’s a statement. A commitment to inclusive urban development. The Haus der Statistik stands as a beacon. A symbol of Berlin’s creative spirit. Its ability to transform the past into a vibrant future. A future built by the people for the people. A future made possible by a bold idea. A banner and a dream. A dream that is slowly coming to life before your eyes.
