Dashing through Berne, the red fire trucks come to mind. This is the Freiwillige Feuerwehr Berne. Since 1921, the Feuerwehr Berne has been safeguarding this part of Hamburg. About 30 firefighters are ready day and night. They assist with fires and technical emergencies.
Around 100 times a year, they leave the Kuhkoppel to help people in need in Berne. To be ready, they meet every two weeks. They practice and maintain their fire engines. But fun is also important. The Feuerwehr Berne and its supporters organize the Faschingsfete. They join the Laternenumzug. They meet with their partner fire department from Leversen-Sieversen.
The Feuerwehr Berne supports local clubs at kids’ festivals. They offer the big red trucks for show. Also, they provide the “hot wire” game. They set up popular water-spraying figures. The Jugendfeuerwehr teaches young people about firefighting. Around 20 kids learn first aid. They also learn how to use technical equipment.
They learn like the adults but playfully and without real danger. The kids learn about community spirit. They collect trash for “Sauberes Berne”. They hang and clean birdhouses. There is fun too. They have game nights and go camping. They compete with other youth fire departments at events like the August-Ernst-Pokal. Here they demonstrate what they have learned.
In September 2021, the Feuerwehr Berne looked back on 100 years. The Jugendfeuerwehr celebrated its 25th anniversary. A big celebration was planned. Sadly, Covid-19 disrupted the plans. The anniversary was to be celebrated in 2022 instead. The Feuerwehr Berne hoped to celebrate its 100+1 year anniversary. They also looked forward to the 25+1 year anniversary of the Jugendfeuerwehr.
The Freiwillige Feuerwehr Berne is more than just a fire station. It is a vital part of the community. The members dedicate themselves to protecting and serving Berne. Their commitment makes Berne a safer place. As you explore Berne, remember the brave individuals. They are always ready to respond. Their dedication deserves our gratitude and respect.
