A sprawling green expanse greets you. This is Yangjae 2-dong a vibrant neighborhood in Seoul’s Seocho District. Yangjae 2-dong isn’t just any neighborhood. It’s home to a significant part of Seoul’s history.
Yangjae-dong itself was once part of Yeongdeungpo District. It then became part of Seongdong District before moving to Gangnam. Finally in 1988 it found its current home in Seocho District. In 1992 a significant change occurred. Yangjae-dong split into two distinct neighborhoods Yangjae 1-dong and Yangjae 2-dong. Each has its own unique character.
Within Yangjae 2-dong lies Maeheon Citizen’s Forest. Originally known as Yangjae Citizen’s Forest this park holds a special place in the hearts of many. Opened in 1986 it was built for the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympics. It boasts a large area filled with landscaped beauty. There is a Grass Field an Octagonal Pavilion and a Pagora a wisteria trellis. But there’s more to this forest than meets the eye.
The forest is more than just a recreational space. It also serves as a memorial. Memorials dedicated to the victims of the Korean Air Flight 858 bombing and the Sampoong Department Store collapse stand as poignant reminders of tragedy. This thoughtful inclusion transforms the forest into a space for reflection.
The park’s name changed in October 2022. It’s now officially called Maeheon Citizen’s Forest. This is in honor of Yun Bong-gil a Korean independence activist. Yun’s daring actions during the 1932 Hongkou Park Incident are remembered here. A memorial hall dedicated to Yun stands within the forest a testament to his sacrifice.
