Opened on November 15 1873 Offenbach Ost station stands as a testament to Frankfurt’s rich railway history. This vital transport hub isn’t just a place to catch a train. It’s a crossroads of stories. Offenbach Ost is the second most important station in Offenbach am Main. It’s a category 3 station. This means it holds a higher status than many others in the region.
Initially part of the Frankfurt-Hanau line Offenbach Ost saw further development with the opening of the Rodgau Railway in 1896. This connected Offenbach to Reinheim. The S-Bahn’s arrival in 2003 modernized the station. The line however doesn’t reach Reinheim anymore. It only goes to Rödermark-Ober-Roden. The line between Dieburg and Reinheim was dismantled.
Offenbach Ost’s importance grew significantly with the opening of the Offenbach City Tunnel in 1995. This underground link sped up connections to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof. S-Bahn lines S1 S2 S8 and S9 now run through the tunnel. They connect to Wiesbaden Hauptbahnhof or Niedernhausen. A parallel S-Bahn line was opened. This line goes to Hanau and continues to be served by S8 and S9 lines.
The station boasts three platform tracks. These handle the busy S-Bahn services. There used to be a platform for regional and long-distance trains. That is no longer used. Its tracks are separated by a soundproof wall. At the western end of the station two tracks lead to the tunnel towards Frankfurt. One track goes to Offenbach Hauptbahnhof. This is used only exceptionally now.
Offenbach Ost is a hive of activity. S-Bahn services run at 30-minute intervals. During peak hours additional services run at 15-minute intervals. Lines S8 and S9 often run at 15-minute intervals during peak hours. Line S8 services go to Hanau during peak hours. At other times they begin or end at Offenbach Ost. Some S1 services originate at Offenbach Ost running to Frankfurt-Höchst or Hochheim.
Before June 14 2010 some S2 services ran between Offenbach Ost and Offenbach Hauptbahnhof. This was due to a lack of capacity in the Frankfurt S-Bahn tunnels. They now all use the tunnels.
Bus routes 102 103 107 108 and 120 also serve Offenbach Ost. Frankfurt’s night bus line n61 stops there too. These buses are operated by Regionalverkehr Kurhessen and Offenbacher Verkehrs-Betriebe. Offenbach Ost station is more than just a transportation hub. It’s a vital link in the fabric of Offenbach am Main. It’s a place where history progress and connectivity meet. A significant part of Frankfurt’s rail history.
