What if these walls could talk? They would tell tales of healing, history and perhaps even a little bit of heroism within the Garnisons-Lazarett I.

Garnisons-Lazarett I stands as one of Berlin’s oldest preserved hospitals. It is located on Scharnhorststraße. This building has witnessed over a century and a half of Berlin’s tumultuous history.

Originally constructed between 1850 and 1853, the Königliche Garnisonlazarett I was designed by Ferdinand Fleischinger, Wilhelm Drewitz and Johann Albrecht Becker. The hospital served as the central medical facility for the Berlin Garrison. Imagine the flurry of activity. Soldiers seeking treatment. Doctors and nurses rushing to their aid. The building was more than just a hospital. It was the heart of military healthcare in Berlin.

The architecture of Garnisons-Lazarett I reflects the Rundbogenstil. This style borrows heavily from the Florentine Early Renaissance. Notice the four-story main building. See its five-story tower-like structures at the ends of the side wings. Look at the round-arched windows and the detailed console cornice. This design was favored by the military building administration at the time.

Over the years, Garnisons-Lazarett I has undergone several transformations. In 1931, a new northwest wing was added. This addition showcases the architectural style of the Neue Sachlichkeit. A glazed stairwell created a seamless transition between the old and new sections. This thoughtful design element connected different eras of architectural styles.

In 1921, the Berlin Security Police took over the Lazarett. From 1945 to 1990, it functioned as the Volkspolizei hospital. Since October 3, 1990, it has been the Bundeswehr Hospital Berlin. This transition marks its continued service to the German military and the city of Berlin.

Today, only the main building from 1853 remains. An addition from 1931 still stands along with the pharmacy and dental station from 1905-1910. These remaining structures offer a glimpse into the past. They show the architectural and functional evolution of the hospital.

The location of Garnisons-Lazarett I is historically significant. The grounds once belonged to the Invalidenpark. Frederick the Great established this park in 1748. This connection to the Invalidenpark adds another layer to the rich history of the site.

Consider the countless lives saved and the medical advancements made within these walls. Garnisons-Lazarett I stands as a testament to Berlin’s resilience. It embodies its commitment to healthcare and its enduring architectural legacy. As you stand here, reflect on the past and appreciate the ongoing significance of this historic hospital. Garnisons-Lazarett I is not just a building. It is a living piece of Berlin’s history.
