The shortest day. The longest night. Dongzhi, the winter solstice, marks this pivotal point in the solar year. Here in Beijing, at the Dongzhi viewpoint, we acknowledge this celestial shift and begin the countdown known as Shǔjiǔ, “Counting to Nine”. The winter solstice, Dongzhi, must always fall in the eleventh month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar. This means that Chinese New Year begins on the second new moon following the winter solstice. This calculation, observed for centuries, dictates the rhythm of festivals and traditions. The “Counting to Nine” period consists of nine nine-day units following Dongzhi, believed to be the coldest days of the year. Each set of nine days is recognized by its number: “One Nine,” “Two Nine,” and so on, until spring arrives with “Nine Nine.” In traditional Chinese culture, the number nine is associated with Yang, the active, masculine principle. The nine repetitions symbolize the gradual diminishing of Yin, the passive, feminine principle, as warmth slowly returns. Ancient Chinese astronomers meticulously tracked the sun’s journey, dividing the solar year into 24 solar terms, known as Jiéqì. Dongzhi is one of these major solar terms, paired with Xiǎohán, “Slight Cold”. These solar terms precisely map the changing seasons, guiding agricultural practices and cultural observances. The Shǔjiǔ period, beginning with Dongzhi, becomes a tangible way to measure the passage of winter, a countdown to spring’s promise.
