Perhaps you have noticed the unique architecture. It defines the Grundschule Mendelstraße. This primary school is not just a place of learning. It is a space where every child is welcome. They are supported to reach their full potential.

Grundschule Mendelstraße is located in Lohbrügge. This part of Hamburg has a rich history. The school’s story is also interesting. The Volks- und Realschule Mendelstraße was built in 1963. Paul Seitz from the Hamburg building authority designed it. Back then, art was integrated into the building. Three murals decorated the stairwell. The “Kunst am Bau” program funded these artworks. Sadly, we do not know who created them.

In 1972, the Grundschule Mendelstraße expanded. By 2020, the school consisted of several buildings. There was an administration wing and a break hall. Also, there was the Seitzhalle. This is a sports hall. The Kreuzbau and four Wabenbau modules completed the ensemble.

Starting in 2020, plans were made to renovate or demolish some buildings. However, the Seitzhalle was to remain. A gymnastics hall would be added. From 2021 to 2025, the school is being gradually renewed. New buildings are being added. They include general classrooms and specialized rooms. There are functional and common areas. The school also gains an administration and all-day area with a cafeteria. The new building serves as the main entrance. It is the new face of the Schulcampus.

The new two-story building has an L-shape. It is built in the southwest. The longer part of the building runs along Mendelstraße. A large covered entrance area marks the entrance. The L-shape opens towards the school grounds. The design is child-friendly. It includes covered break areas and green roofs.

The ground floor houses communal spaces. These include the cafeteria and the all-day area. The upper floor hosts learning areas. Each wing features four classrooms. There are group rooms and studio spaces. Central areas offer rooms for research and a library.

The school’s structure is a wooden skeleton with steel supports. The facade has a wood frame. It has a ventilated larch wood cladding. Vertical wood and horizontal windows define the look. Durable materials ensure a healthy environment. Inside, contrasts of wood and mineral surfaces create a friendly space. Natural colors support a child-friendly atmosphere at Grundschule Mendelstraße.

Since 2013, Grundschule Mendelstraße has been an all-day school. Classes take place between 8 am and 1 pm. Afternoon programs offer various activities. These are in cooperation with Elbkinder. Additional care is available before and after school hours. The Grundschule Mendelstraße is more than just a school. It is a community hub.
