“Imagine Gandhi’s vision splashed across a wall.” That’s the essence of the Dreams of India Mural. It’s not just paint. It’s a powerful message frozen in time.

The Dreams of India Mural was created for a special occasion. It marked the centenary exhibition of Gandhi in Rajghat, Delhi, in 1969. Think of it as a centerpiece for a pavilion called ‘India of My Dreams’. Architect Charles Correa designed this open courtyard. It measured approximately 12m x 12m.

Artist K.G. Subramanyan brought the vision to life. He initially planned a mural with a water reflection. But he later changed his mind.

The Dreams of India Mural comprises three parts. Two sections stand vertically. The center one stretches horizontally. Subramanyan used sand-cast cement units. These units were placed on cement concrete. Other materials were added. The heights vary from 2.4m to 3m.

Work on the Dreams of India Mural started in 1968. It wrapped up in 1969. This wasn’t Subramanyan’s first cement mural. He had collaborated with Gyarsilal Varma before. They mastered the art of sand-cast cement murals over years. Gyarsilal Varma’s brother, Kishorelal, helped. Laxma Goud also assisted.

The Dreams of India Mural is more than art. It’s a historical marker. It embodies a nation’s aspirations. The Dreams of India Mural captures a moment in time.

Today visitors come to admire the Dreams of India Mural. It’s a testament to artistic collaboration. It is a visual representation of a dream for a nation. The Dreams of India Mural stands as a powerful reminder.

Take a closer look. Notice the intricate details. Feel the texture of the cement. Consider the vision of Gandhi that inspired it all. This is a mural with a purpose. It shows the dreams of a nation. It is a moment captured forever.
