Have you ever felt the cool breeze of a Berlin summer near a tranquil lake? Welcome to the LSG Kaulsdorfer Seen. This isn’t just any park. It’s a 937 hectare landscape protection area a haven of nature in the heart of Marzahn-Hellersdorf.
The LSG Kaulsdorfer Seen boasts a rich history. Butzer See and Habermannsee weren’t always here. They emerged in the 1930s from sand and gravel extraction. As the pits filled with groundwater these beautiful lakes were born. Today they are a vital part of the Kaulsdorfer Seen landscape.
These aren’t just pretty faces though. The lakes play a crucial role. They supply water to the Kaulsdorf waterworks built in 1916. This waterworks sits just west of Habermannsee. A narrow sandy ridge sometimes divides Habermannsee into east and west sections. The western part is sometimes called Kiessee or gravel lake.
The Kaulsdorfer Busch a forested area nearby adds to the scene. It’s a mix of poplars pines and spruces. It’s not just for show either. The forest is actively managed for forestry.
Nature thrives here. A diverse range of plants and animals call the Kaulsdorfer Seen home. Think lush forests meadows and reed-covered shores. The waters themselves are teeming with life. Eels pike and perch are among the native fish.
However there’s a shadow over this idyllic scene. Despite being a drinking water protection area the lakes suffer from illegal swimming. The resulting pollution damages the delicate ecosystem. Litter left by bathers threatens the groundwater quality impacting Berlin’s drinking water supply.
But there is also much joy here. The Kaulsdorfer Seen are a beloved recreational area. Twice a year a cross-country run circles the lakes drawing runners from across Berlin. The SG Stern Kaulsdorf sports club even has its grounds near Butzer See.
The LSG Kaulsdorfer Seen represent a balance. They are a haven of nature a valuable water resource and a cherished recreational spot for Berliners. They remind us of the delicate balance between the needs of nature and the enjoyment of people. They are a unique blend of history nature and community. And that’s the story of the LSG Kaulsdorfer Seen.
