Built in 1928 Pershing Middle School initially served white students only. This Houston institution originally shared a campus with West University Elementary School. Imagine the hustle and bustle of two schools sharing one space. In 1949 Pershing moved to its own two million dollar campus. This was quite a sum back then. The Braes Heights Realty Company donated the land for this new building. A significant upgrade for the school and the community.

The school’s history isn’t without its challenges. An arson attack occurred in 1958. This must have been incredibly disruptive for the students and staff. Pershing desegregated by 1970. This momentous change reflected a broader societal shift in the United States. Despite its success it faced capacity issues. By 1991 enrollment was capped forcing some students to attend other schools.

The year 2005 marked the beginning of a new era for Pershing Middle School. Construction began on a brand new two-story campus. This impressive 216000-square-foot building cost a total of $31 million. The new building opened in January 2007. The old campus wasn’t completely demolished. Chimney swifts made their home in the chimney. This saved a part of the school’s history.

Pershing Middle School is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a vibrant hub. It boasts a fine arts magnet program that specializes in music. The school uses a unique clustering system. This system groups students into smaller units of 150. This allows for more personalized attention from a dedicated team of teachers. The racial makeup of these clusters mirrors the entire school population. This commitment to diversity is a testament to its inclusive ethos.

Pershing’s academic achievements speak for themselves. In 2008 a remarkable 93 percent of students passed state tests. This was a huge improvement from seven years earlier. The school’s commitment to its students is evident in its diverse programs. One teacher even incorporates gardening into the curriculum. Students harvest vegetables. They even sell the extra produce at the Rice University farmers market. This unique initiative promotes healthy eating and entrepreneurship.

Pershing Middle School’s legacy extends beyond its walls. Many notable alumni have gone on to achieve great success. These include actors Dennis and Randy Quaid actress Farrah Fawcett and actress Phylicia Rashad. Even famous racecar driver A J Foyt Jr attended Pershing. The school’s influence is remarkable. Pershing continues to shape the lives of its students. It remains an integral part of Houston’s rich history.
