Ever wondered who Jerome Playground is named after? This park carries the name of Leonard W. Jerome. He was a prominent Brooklyn citizen. Jerome made and lost several fortunes. People called him the King of Wall Street.

Jerome’s influence extended beyond finance. He owned The New York Times for years. He founded the American Academy of Music. Interestingly, he was also Winston Churchill’s maternal grandfather.

Jerome was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed yachting and horse racing. He co-founded the American Jockey Club. He built the Jerome Park Racetrack in the Bronx with his brothers. August Belmont also helped.

The Jerome Park Racetrack opened in 1866. It marked thoroughbred racing’s return after the Civil War. The racetrack had a large dining room. There was also a magnificent ballroom. Clubhouse accommodations equaled luxury hotels.

The Belmont Stakes first took place at Jerome Park in 1867. It remained there until 1890. The city then acquired the property. It was to build the Jerome Park Reservoir for the New Croton Aqueduct.

Jerome’s daughter, Jennie Jerome, had a remarkable life. She was born in Brooklyn. In 1867, she moved to Paris with her mother and sisters. She mingled with European upper classes. In 1873, she met Lord Randolph Churchill.

Jennie married Lord Randolph Churchill in 1874. She became a success in British high society. She opposed women’s suffrage. She and her son Winston faced heckling from suffragettes. After her husband’s death, she edited a magazine. She also wrote books and plays.

Jerome Playground was acquired in 1950. It opened in 1955. It was built with PS 273. The school was known as the Wortman School. In 1987, the playground was renamed Jerome Playground. This was after Jerome Street nearby.

In 1998, the playground was renovated. New play equipment was installed. Benches were repaired and a flagpole was added. Sidewalk pavement was replaced too. These improvements ensured a better space for everyone.

So, as you enjoy Jerome Playground remember its namesake. Leonard W. Jerome was a man of many talents. He left a lasting impact on New York City. His legacy lives on in this park.
