Suspended nine meters above the ground, Planet M in Hanover looks like a metallic spaceship. It once symbolized the impact of media on human history. Built for Bertelsmann’s presence at Expo 2000, Planet M quickly became a signature piece of the event. Its design, by TRIAD Berlin, was striking. The pavilion’s shape and materials shifted throughout the day. Transparent forms dominated during daylight hours, giving way to illuminated installations at night. A massive elevator, said to be the world’s largest at the time, carried up to 220 people inside Planet M. Visitors experienced a multivision show. This show highlighted key moments in both human and media history. A “type case” the size of a house, known as the media gallery, showcased various objects, images, videos, and texts. The windows of the compartments, changing from transparent to opaque, created an ever-shifting pixel grid. Over a million visitors experienced Planet M at Expo 2000. It set a new attendance record for the event. The combination of stunning architecture and an impressive interior design garnered extensive media coverage. Today, Planet M is used by Hannover University of Applied Sciences. It stands as a reminder of a world exposition that celebrated the dawn of a new millennium.
